UNDO – Ontario Enhanced Rock Weathering

Project Overview

The UNDO Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) project accelerates the natural weathering of silicate rock, in particular wollastonite, to capture atmospheric CO₂ and convert it into stable bicarbonate ions stored in the oceans for millennia. By spreading mineral-rich crushed rock on agricultural land in Ontario, the project not only removes carbon but also improves soil health, crop resilience, and nutrient efficiency, providing tangible co-benefits for farmers. Using existing mining, haulage, and agricultural infrastructure, UNDO sources wollastonite from the Saint Lawrence Wollastonite Deposit and applies it across fields. Carbon removal is quantified through robust verification methods, including Total Cation Accounting, soil sampling, and water monitoring. With scaling plans and partnerships with local farmers and Canadian Wollastonite, ERW demonstrates how nature-based solutions can deliver durable carbon sequestration while enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting rural communities.

Partners Descriptions

UNDO is a climate tech company using Enhanced Rock Weathering to capture CO₂ by spreading crushed silicate rocks on farmland. This process improves soil health, strengthens crops, and reduces fertilizer use. UNDO works closely with local farmers and has partnered with Microsoft, McLaren, British Airways, and others to scale their carbon removal solutions.

Canadian Wollastonite, based in Ontario, is Canada’s only wollastonite mine and the first industrial minerals operation approved in Southern Ontario in over 30 years. A global leader in sustainable mineral development, CW partners with universities to explore innovative uses of wollastonite, from improving soil health to carbon sequestration. On its 220-hectare property, less than 15 percent is mined, with the rest restored to support biodiversity. Over 15,000 native trees have been planted and new wetlands created, fostering local wildlife. CW demonstrates that responsible mining and ecological renewal can go hand in hand.

UNDO partners with a growing number of farmers in the Ontario region who cover the cost of trucking to receive crushed wollastonite on their fields. These farmers cultivate crops such as hay, corn, and soy, using the mineral to improve soil health, boost yield resilience, and reduce fertilizer use.

UNDO is collaborating with Microsoft to accelerate the deployment of Enhanced Rock Weathering for carbon removal, building on Microsoft’s third party carbon removal portfolio. Microsoft has purchased 28,900 tonnes of permanent carbon removal from UNDO, its largest ERW contract to date, which brings its total commitment to nearly 49,000 tonnes.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) & Co-benefits

The UNDO Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) project removes CO₂ from the atmosphere while improving soil health, crop resilience, and nutrient efficiency. By working with local farmers and contractors, it boosts productivity, reduces fertilizer use, and creates green jobs in rural communities. The process also benefits ocean health, as alkaline bicarbonates help deacidify oceans and support marine life. UNDO demonstrates how carbon removal can drive environmental and social impact while supporting sustainable agriculture.
